Japan: Wearables not to be found
Judging by first impressions, smart wristbands haven’t caught on at all in Japan. Scouring a six-floor electronics store in downtown Tokyo today finally led to a lame collection of Fitbit One and Zips, and a “take to the checkout” card for a Jawbone UP.
The store had actually devoted more space to Hello Kitty-styled power chargers for smartphones than to smart wristbands.
The fact that wearables apparently aren’t big in Japan is a surprise for a nation obsessed with gadgets. Only in Japan can you buy a little cartoon character motif to fit into the earphone socket of your smartphone.
The search will continue later this week with a trip to the electronics nirvana of Akihabara. If wearables are anywhere to be found in Japan, this is where they’ll be.
The pricing was competitive, though – with the Fitbit One retailing at ¥9505, or around US $93, about six percent cheaper than US retail prices.
