Fitbit Wrong-Footed by Android 4.3 Update
Leading wearable technology wristband manufacturer Fitbit has seemingly been wrong-footed by the latest software update for Samsung Galaxy smartphones, which breaks Bluetooth syncing with the Flex model.
So far, Fitbit has offered three totally different answers to a really simple question: Will the Samsung Galaxy S4 sync with a Fitbit Flex?
Until recently the flagship of Fitbit’s wearable range, one of the Flex’s competitive advantages is the ability to sync data with “selected” iPhone and Samsung Galaxy smartphones via Bluetooth.
Just weeks after rival Jawbone reported issues with its UP app after the Apple iOS upgrade on iPhone, so Fitbit is seemingly confused about whether or not the Flex will sync with phones running the 4.3 Jelly Bean update, and offers three different answers.
So what’s the actual answer, Fitbit, and when can I resume syncing?
Answer One: No it does not work. After my upgrade to the latest and greatest (official Samsung) version of Android’s Jelly Bean operating system, the Fitbit app reported:
There are known issues with Bluetooth 4.0 sync on your Android device.
Answer Two: Yes it works! (except it doesn’t). The Fitbit website states exactly the opposite: “Several Android devices are supported at this time. Supported Android devices have: Bluetooth 4.0 (check), Android 4.3+ (check) or select Samsung devices (check).
Answer Three: We know it doesn’t quite work but hang on a minute. Fitbit customer support tells a different version again of the story:
Please note that in order to ensure sync reliability, we are currently in the final stages of testing sync on certain devices running Android 4.3. Once we ensure that there are no major issues we will enable syncing for those devices which previously had syncing ability running Android 4.2.2 or less; we expect this to be within the very near future. We appreciate your patience as we work to ensure sync reliability.
I’ll update this post once Fitbit has decided which answer it prefers – ideally one that gets my Flex back in sync.
UPDATE: Fitbit has now issued a patch … see this post for more information.
