ERI finally ships smart wristband – but first impressions disappoint

DigiCare, the Hong Kong outfit behind the ERI wristband, has finally started shipping the smart bands to people who supported their successful raise on Indiegogo, but first impressions are disappointing.

Originally slated to ship in January this year, DigiCare has had a tough year, with the departure of helmsman Jimmie Liao, and repeated delays in finalizing the product. Now that it has finally passed international customs clearance and arrived in our hands, we’re rather disappointed.

Why? Because a lot of the promised features failed to materialize in the end – such as the flexible battery, and the silicon bracelet, which feels identical to the Fitbit Flex, not “softer” and “almost weightless” as Jimmy promised. Also gone is the battery that ‘lasts twice or three times as long as the current generation of devices’, since the manual says ERI needs charging every 7-10 days.

Nor is there any sign of the Near-Field Communication that was built in to the prototype, or the ability to track “geo-magnetic variation data”. Disappointing.

Just another wristband

In short, it’s just another me-too wristband, although the device does show a temperature readout on the OLED display.

In terms of appearance, the ERI looks almost identical to the ill-fated Fitbit Force, except it avoids the use of nickel for the clasp. The tracker is screwed to the silicon band, similar to the Polar Loop.

The device comes with a charger and users track their stats via an iPhone app – with support for Android smartphones “coming soon”.

We’ll test it and report back.
