A Bold move: New Alibaba-sourced smartwatch hits the US market
There’s a new smartwatch on the block, and it’s certainly making a BOLD statement. We’re a little confused about the actual name of the product, which is either the iSporTix (according to the website), or the BOLD Band CLASIQ & SPORT according to “Creator and CEO” Kevin Ciesielski’s page on LinkedIn.
The watch is on sale at a just over $300, with the tagline “wear your phone around your wrist”.
It is taking a no-nonsense, “fork lift” straight-at-the-problem approach of porting a fully-functional 4G/LTE smartphone into a wristwatch form factor, as it packs in a 1.54-inch Screen, 1GHz Dual Core CPU, Bluetooth 4.0, GPS and Wi-Fi. The result? “The perfect example of what the future of mobile phone technology has to offer.”
It’s certainly a bold move, but we’re not sure about Kevin’s creator claim, since it looks like a straight import from Alibaba, the Chinese commerce site. Alibaba is absolutely brimming with smartwatches – with more than 500 suppliers offering a staggering 28,000 different options, although some look more attractive than others. Kevin’s Bold looks very closely related to the Gaoxin “smart wifi Bluetooth smartwatch”, but it could be one of 100.
Details of actual spec are a bit murky – the website says it has a 1GHz dual-core CPU, elsewhere it claims both 1.2GHz and 1.25GHz, and we’re frankly puzzled by the promotional shot (zoom in) showing “Google Maps built in the Wave”, since of all the towns in all the world, it includes a streetmap of Dubai in the United Arab Emirates: somewhere that relatively few Americans care to venture.
The BOLD is said to come complete with a smartphone app, although WTW tried without success to download the versions for iPhone and Android. The Android app did download from the Amazon link, though …
Ciesielski’s firm is also touting a GOFiT smart wristband. It’s a brave move by Houston, Texas-based Kevin, as this is a straight import of a Copy China, Made in Shenzhen smart wristband, although the BOLD online store appears to have some teething troubles, as no retail price is yet available. For a minimum order of 3000 pieces, the bands are available as the “WP-808” on Alibaba for a target of $25-30 each, so expect a US retail price around $49.99. Details of the app are not yet available.
